Scope and Contents From the Collection:

The collection consists of one box, 15” x 5” x 10”. It contains mostly paper materials, documents, travel and military records and certificates, newspaper and magazine clippings, a notebook, handwritten slips, and similar items. A small box containing military buttons and insignia is included.

103rd Aero Squadron Logbook Collection (Lafayette Escadrille)

Abstract

Two of the most prized possessions in the Museum's collection are a pair of logbooks recording events related to the 103rd Aero Squadron from the First World War. These two logbooks give insight into the thrilling combat stories of the squadron, as well as the more mundane day to day activities of its members.

Errold G. Bahl (EGB, October 26, 1894 – October 26, 1930) was one of the early birds of aviation, an aircraft pilot, mechanic, barnstormer, and entrepreneur. He attended the School of Military Aeronautics, flew in Latin America, was a mentor to Lindbergh, and formed the Harding, Zook and Bahl Airplane Corporation. This collection includes material relating to his life in aviation, as well as the Harding, Zook and Bahl Corporation.

Horace Clyde Balsley Personal Papers

Abstract Primarily, this collection focuses on Balsley’s service as a member of the Lafayette Escadrille. A significant item is a reprint of Balsley’s war-time diary. This collection contains many newspaper clippings concerning injuries sustained when his airplane was shot down in service. Balsley gained some fame and therefore generated much publicity when making appearances or speeches during his subsequent service during war bond drives. Richard Denbo Personal Papers

Abstract

Richard M. Denbo was born on March 10, 1897 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Denbo served as an aviation engine mechanic. He transferred his interest as an auto mechanic to aircraft engines when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1917. He was assigned to the 80th as Chauffeur-Mechanic in the 805th Aero Squadron in France and England between January 22, 1918, and June 5, 1919.
